FOCUS : CINEMA FROM THE NORTH EASTERN STATES
The Seven Sister States of India, at the North East, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Tripura have not been able to wake up to realize the realm of Cinema and its far reaching effects, owing to the state of insurgency and socio-political situations prevalent there. The diversity in geographical locations, culture, language, dress, lifestyle and ethnicity of these states has never been showcased to the world.
Till 2016, more than 5 films were showcased in DIFF from Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and one from Meghalaya too.
What is even more encouraging is the fact that an Assamese film YUGDRISHTHA which won the Best Film Award at DIFF, went on to win the National Award that year. Also films like MORISIKA, PRATYABHAN THE CHALLENGE etc from the North Eastern States, have made a mark as very good cinema shown at DIFF and outside too.
In 2016, DIFF focused on films from North Eastern states and has extended the focus for a total of three consecutive years.
